Can You Enjoy Treats Without Sugar?
During the holidays, you can still enjoy your favorite treats without the guilt of consuming sugar. Simply replace sugar with a natural sweetener like stevia or monk fruit. These healthier alternatives allow you to indulge without the harmful effects of traditional sugar. To maintain your energy and health throughout the season, remember to limit your portion sizes for treats and balance them with nutrient-rich meals. With these simple swaps, you can savor holiday desserts while staying healthy!
If you’re new to natural sweeteners, you might wonder how they compare to sugar. Both stevia and monk fruit are derived from natural plant sources, offering sweetness without the calories or spike your blood sugar associated with traditional sugar. They’re widely regarded as safe throughout the world, and even have added benefits—monk fruit, for instance, has anti-inflammatory properties. Plus, neither sweetener has been shown to be addictive.
While these options are fantastic for replacing sugar, taste preferences vary. Some people find stevia to have a slight bitterness, while others find monk fruit’s taste less appealing. Personally, I don’t notice the bitterness in stevia and prefer monk fruit for baking. Below, I’ve included more details about each sweetener and how to use them effectively in your holiday recipes.
Stevia: Nature’s Sweet Leaf
Where It Comes From
Stevia is derived from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant, native to South America. It has been used for centuries as a natural sweetener and medicinal herb. The sweetness comes from steviol glycosides, compounds that provide which provide a sugar-like taste without impacting blood sugar levels.
Why It’s Safe
Stevia is calorie-free and does not affect insulin levels, making it an ideal choice for those following low-carb or keto diets. Approved by global health organizations, it’s been extensively tested for safety and effectiveness.
Monk Fruit: A Sweet Gift from Nature
Where It Comes From
Monk fruit, also known or luo han guo, is a small melon native to Southeast Asia. Its sweetness comes from mogrosides, which are significantly sweeter than sugar yet contain no calories or carbs.
Why It’s Safe
Monk fruit is a natural sweetener that does not affect blood sugar levels, making it ideal for those on keto or low-carb diets. It’s also heat-stable, which makes it a great choice for baking.
Baking with Monk Fruit and Stevia
When baking with natural sweeteners, it’s important to consider their unique taste profiles and adjust your recipes accordingly. Monk fruit is generally better for baking because it blends well, holds up to heat, and has a neutral flavor. Stevia, on the other hand, works best in beverages or lighter desserts due to its potential for a slight aftertaste.
For consistent results, I recommend using powdered forms of these sweeteners. When you use the liquid for, it is wise to look them up to make sure you are using them appropriately. My favorite brand is Wholesome Yum’s Besti products, which offer a 1:1 sugar replacement ratio, eliminating the need for adjustments. For monk fruit, I prefer blends that include allulose instead of erythritol, as erythritol has been linked to potential health issues like blood clots. Here is Besti’s Monk Fruit with Allulose.
When choosing stevia, choose a pure versions without additives. Sweet Leaf liquid stevia is an excellent choice, as it contains no fillers. Be cautious with blends like Truvia, which may include erythritol or other ingredients. Stevia in the Raw does have dextrose in it.
Why Reading Labels Matters
Reading labels is essential, especially if you have allergies or health concerns. Many products marketed as “natural” or “healthy” may still contain added sugars, fillers, or artificial ingredients. For keto or health-conscious lifestyles, check for hidden carbs and prioritize pure forms of sweeteners. Some stevia products may have maltodextrin or dextrose . Dextrose can be good and bad. The good is similar to glucose the bad it gets stored to in your fat and other issues. For example, maltodextrin, Medical News Today indicates it can spike blood glucose and raise cholesterol. Always choose the purest options to keep your treats truly healthy.
The Importance of Portion Sizes
Even when using calorie-free natural sweeteners, moderation is key. Overeating any treat, no matter how healthy, can lead to imbalances. To keep holiday indulgences in check, limit portion sizes and savor each bite.
Eating Nutritious Foods
Holiday sweets should remain an occasional indulgence rather than a daily habit. Pairing treats with balanced, nutrient-rich meals ensure you’re fueling your body with good nutrition while enjoying seasonal delights. This balance helps keep energy levels steady and supports overall health during the holidays.
Seeking Recipes?
If you’re looking for recipes, feel free to reach out! I feature different healthy recipes in every newsletter. One rule I have is to make sure the ingredients you use don’t have sugar or additives. If you want to make a simple chocolate chip cookie recipe, consider using almond flour or coconut flour instead of wheat flour. Wheat is a GMO product that is hard to digest. It corrupts your villi in the intestinal track that leads to health issues. Check out my article “Do You Have the Battle of the Gut” for more details. A great replacement for chocolate chips is Keystone Pantry Keto Chocolate Morsels.
A basic Keto Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe is:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups almond or coconut flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 cup melted coconut oil or grass-fed butter (preferred)
- 1/3 cup powdered Besti Monk Fruit with Allulose
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup Keystone Pantry Keto Chocolate Morsels
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Mix almond or coconut flour with baking soda in a bowl.
- Add melted coconut oil or grassfed butter, Besti Monk with Allulose, vanilla, and egg. Mix until well combined.
- Fold in chocolate morsels.
- Scoop dough onto a lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until edges are golden.
Check out more recipes from Wholesome Yum. One I like is Coconut Flour Cookies in my first December Newsletter in 2024. Again, I would replace the oil with grassfed better instead.
