Could I Run? From “Never Could” to Half-Marathon Finisher
Could I run? From “Never Could” to Half-Marathon Finisher, I did accomplish it. For most of my life, running was the stuff of dreams—something I thought I’d never experience. Foot problems from childhood through adulthood had doctors declaring, “You’ll never be able to run.” That statement hung over me like a dark cloud, a constant reminder of what I couldn’t do. Even walking was often painful.
A Turning Point: Finding Relief
Let me tell you, life has a funny way of surprising us. Everything changed when I discovered a supplement plan that worked wonders for my whole body and my feet. Suddenly, the pain that had held me back for decades began to fade. For the first time, I felt a freedom in my movement that seemed impossible before. My heart soared with hope, and I dared to dream: Could I actually run?
Could I Run? – Taking the First Steps at 49
At 49 years old, I decided to find out. I started small, walking on a treadmill for 40-50 minutes, four to five days a week. Slowly, I added short bursts of jogging, my excitement growing with each stride. This wasn’t just exercise; it was a revelation!
The Power of Running with Others
The real breakthrough came when a friend—a seasoned runner—invited me to run outside with her group. She assured me, “It’s completely different out here.” She was right. I felt the sun on my face, the rhythm of my feet hitting the ground, and the exhilaration of pushing myself. On one unforgettable run, I pushed through seven miles—my longest distance yet. I could not keep up where her. When she got to her walk interval, I caught up with her. She explained that I hit the infamous “wall”. At that moment where, every ounce of energy feels depleted, but I kept going.
From Doubt to the Finish Line: My First Half-Marathon
I continued running with my friend, and one day, she asked me, “Do you want to do a half-marathon with me?” My first thought was, “Is she crazy?” But after much thought—and a little encouragement—I decided to go for it. At the age of 51, I signed up for my first half-marathon.
Race day came, and it was buzzing with excitement. The energy from the starting line felt like a stampede, and I couldn’t help myself—I surged ahead, passing my friend right out of the gate. She called out, “Slow down!” But I was too caught up in the moment. Somewhere along the course, I lost sight of her, and to my amazement, I actually crossed the finish line before her!
Building Momentum and Facing Setbacks
I was on top of the world, but I didn’t stop there. I went on to run five more half-marathons, each one a thrilling challenge to push myself further. Then came the unexpected. I broke my foot just weeks before my seventh race. It was devastating. I refused to let it define me. I stayed positive, focusing on my recovery and knowing I would heal quickly. Thankfully, I did!
The Cha-Cha Recovery and a Wind-Fueled Triumph
Getting back into running was far from graceful. My muscle imbalance caused me to stumble and fall often. I felt like I was doing the cha-cha and laughed it off.
Still, I decided I would run my seventh half-marathon no matter what. It didn’t matter how fast or slow I went; I just wanted to finish.
In February 2024, I faced my toughest race yet. The wind was brutal, a relentless 10-20 mile per hour headwind that pushed back with every step. Guess what. I didn’t just survive it—I thrived! When I crossed the finish line, something incredible happened. Instead of being completely spent as in past races, I felt invigorated, excited and energized like never before.
A Journey of Transformation
From being told I could “never run” to completing seven half-marathons, my journey has been nothing short of transformative. It’s proof that limitations are meant to be shattered. It’s a story of resilience, hope, and sheer determination. A reminder that when we listen to our bodies, trust in our abilities, and refuse to give up, we can achieve the extraordinary.
This is more than a running journey. It’s a celebration of life, of overcoming the impossible, and of writing a story that’s far from over. Let me tell you—I can’t wait to see what’s next!
