How to Address Back-to-School Anxiety? Understanding the Root Causes
As the school year approaches, anxiety often rises for both children and parents. While a bit of nervousness about new experiences is natural, understanding the root causes of anxiety can help manage it more effectively. In this blog post, I’ll explore the role of the autonomic nervous system, the brain-gut connection, and how diet impacts anxiety. I’ll also share practical solutions that I’ve successfully used with my clients, including mindset coaching, nutritional guidance, and emotional support.
The Autonomic Nervous System’s Role in Anxiety
The autonomic nervous system is crucial in how our bodies respond to stress. The autonomic nervous system consists of two main components: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system triggers the “fight, flight and freeze” response during stressful situations, which can be beneficial in short bursts. However, when this response is constantly activated, it can lead to chronic anxiety, stress and disease.
On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system helps the body relax and recover. Anxiety often arises when the sympathetic nervous system is overactive, and the parasympathetic nervous system. isn’t counterbalancing it effectively. It causes symptoms of a dysregulated nervous system. It is important to use techniques like deep diaphragmatic breathing, box breathing, and meditation can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting calmness and reducing anxiety.
The Brain-Gut Connection: How Diet Affects Anxiety
An often-overlooked factor in anxiety is gut health. The gut and brain are connected through the gut-brain axis, a communication network linking the brain’s emotional and cognitive centers with intestinal functions. When the gut is unhealthy, you will have cloudy thinking. When your brain senses anxiety, you will have butterflies of feeling in your gut.
A poor diet, especially one high in processed foods, additives, and food coloring, can damage gut health. These substances can inflame the gut, leading to issues like leaky gut syndrome, which exacerbates anxiety and other mental health concerns. Gluten is a common culprit, acting like glue in the digestive tract and shortening the villi responsible for nutrient absorption. This can lead to nutrient malabsorption, further contributing to anxiety.
The Importance of a Clean, Gluten-Free Diet
To support gut health and reduce anxiety, it’s essential to follow a clean, toxin-free, gluten-free diet. By eliminating processed foods, additives, and food coloring, you create an environment where your gut can thrive, positively impacting mental health.
While supplements can support gut health, they are not a substitute for a healthy diet. It’s crucial to consume and stick to a healthy diet. This way you will be able to absorb your supplementation better and achieve better results. As I often remind my clients, you can’t out-supplement a poor diet as one of my mentors instilled In me.
Foods Are Not Complete: Solutions for Young Kids
Nutritional supplementation is essential due to the lack of nutrients in our produce and meats. Think of our bodies like Swiss cheese. We need a solid base of nutrients to fill the gaps left by our food. There’s something suitable for all ages.
Kids Toddy is an excellent start for young children, though some may need additional minerals. Minerals are vital for maintaining health, as they keep our bones strong and support the proper functioning of muscles, the heart, hormones, and the brain. Plant-derived colloidal minerals are more absorbable, and Cheri-Mins or Strawberry-Mins are tasty options kids love. They can drink a “shot” of it, or you can easily mix them into their favorite drinks for a good dose of minerals. If they’re reluctant to drink it, KidSprinklz is another great option. These products will help keep their body and brain healthier.
Helping Young Children Navigate New Experiences
For children, new experiences, such as starting a new school year, can be a significant source of anxiety. Building their confidence and providing tools to manage emotions can go a long way in easing their worries.
Front Loading children with what to expect can help reduce anxiety. This includes giving them an ideas what they expect during the day, informing them of pickup times, and highlighting exciting extracurricular activities they can do after school.
Books are also a great way to help children build confidence and manage their emotions. I recommend the “Your Superpowers 4 Book Box Set” for younger children, which teaches them about confidence, empathy, gratitude, and mindfulness. Another great book is by Sean Covey, the son of Stephen Covey, “The 7 Habits of Happy Kids” by Sean Covey. For older children, Stephen Covey has is an excellent resource for teaching values like leadership, responsibility, and problem-solving called “Leader In Me”.
Emotional Support with Essential Oils
Essential oils can be a valuable tool for managing anxiety, especially in children. I have access to a wonderful essential oil kit, Children’s Blended On-The-Go Oil Kit specifically designed for children. These blended oils are safe and can help ease emotions and promote well-being.
My Mindset & Emotional Coaching
If there is a history of trauma or significant anxiety, seeking guidance from a coach or professional can be helpful. Through my mindset and emotional coaching, I help individuals identify and release stress, emotions, and past entanglements. I also teach children how to reframe their thoughts and focus on positive moments, which can soothe their anxiety.
Addressing College Student’s Anxiety
Just as younger children face anxiety during big transitions, college students may also experience stress and uncertainty as they start a new chapter. To help ease their anxiety, consider the following approaches:
Planting Seeds
Giving them ideas on great experiences, situations, resources that college life provides is so helpful. Each university has it own resources of clubs, social organizations, medical and mental resources to make anyone leaving home can make them more comfortable.
Create a Vision Board
Encourage your college students to create a Vision Board. I can lead a private coaching session where I give them concepts on how to visualize their goals, strengths, and assets, boosting their confidence. With a positive outlook, they can begin incorporating healthy habits into their lifestyle one step at a time. Some concepts are covered in my “VisionCast” episode of my show “Debi Changes Lives”.
Reflect on Your College Experience
Were you always confident in everything you did. Probably not. Many young adults struggle with confidence and self-worth, often being overly critical of themselves. This negativity and perfectionism can hinder their progress. Help them become aware of their self-perception and work on building a positive mindset to be more forgiving.
Mindset Coaching – A Wholistic Approach
I guide college students through a deep dive into their mind, body, and soul, focusing on gratitude and self-love. Journaling and ‘Mirror Love’ exercises help them see and accept themselves, counteracting perfectionism that often leads to unhappiness. For more ideas, watch my “Wholistic Self-Love” episode from “Debi Changes Lives”.
Time Management with the 5 P’s
Time management can help everyone. College students must adapt to a more flexible schedule to manage their responsibilities effectively. The 5 P’s—Prioritize, Plan, Procrastination, Productivity, and Positivity—are key to reducing stress.
Prioritize
By focusing on what’s most important and urgent helps to streamline responsibilities such as academic, family, social, and work are met.
Plan
Using calendars or apps to organize your tasks and aim to complete them ahead of time. Helps to reduce stress, builds confidence, and ensures you never miss a deadline.
Procrastination
Identifying what causes you to delay tasks helps. Sometimes the task is too big. Break it down into manageable steps. Read my blog post “Why Mold Healthy Habits? Small Steps Big Change”. The overwhelming fear may be driving you to social media distractions.
Productivity
Make the most of your time by using the right tools. College students do work in teams, delegating tasks to those who have the right skills. It makes the project more efficient, and you can learn from them. Seeking help from others, such as professors or experts, is helpful too.
Positivity
Maintain a positive attitude. Fear, frustration and doubt are low vibrational energies that will pause you, stop you and get you stuck. Plus, they make you more reactive. positivity helps you stay proactive and achieve your goals
By learning to manage their time wisely, students can make life more manageable and less stressful.
Understanding and Managing Stress
Stress often arises from fear, frustration, and doubt, activating the sympathetic nervous system and putting the body in a reactive state. Understanding where stress originates is crucial. While you can’t always control external events or what happens to you, recognizing the source of stress can help you detach from it. I assist people in identifying their stress and triggers. When you or college students grasp these concepts, they can learn to manage their stress. Techniques like deep diaphragmatic breathing and meditation can also help students stay calm and focused.
Good Nutritional Aids in Releasing Stress
As I mentioned, maintaining a clean, toxin-free diet along with high-quality supplements is essential for health and stress reduction. The Healthy Body Start Pak is a great solution is a great solution for anyone aged 13 and up, including adults. It comes in various forms: powders, liquids, tablets, and capsules, so there’s something for everyone.
When you’re stressed, your body burns through nutrients more quickly. It’s recommended to use additional Plant Derived Minerals to support your body’s needs during stressful times.
Also, the brain-gut connection plays a significant role in managing anxiety. I recommend RenuIQ for reducing anxiety, stress, and improving cognition, especially during finals. It can help everyone from young children to senior citizens. Consider RenuIQ an essential part of your college student’s toolkit. For more information on preparing your student for college read my blog post “Ready for a Healthy Dorm Life?” and watch Larene Williamson’s episode on “Brain Support for All Ages” on “Debi Changes Lives” show.
Keeping Anxiety in Check
Back-to-school anxiety is common, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By understanding the role of the autonomic nervous system, supporting the brain-gut connection through a clean diet, and providing emotional support, you can help your young children, college students, and yourself manage anxiety more effectively.
