Debi’s Podcast Ditch Vague Resolutions – Intentions Create Real Change
Radio & TV Show – Debi Changes Lives Episode – January 1, 2026
Have you ever wondered why your New Year’s resolutions vanish by February, despite your best efforts to change? I see so many people give up and become discouraged when their resolutions don’t work out. In my Radio & TV Show—Debi Changes Lives. I opened up this new year encouraging people to ditch vague resolutions and create intentions with habits instead.
January marks more than the start of a new calendar year. It represents a powerful doorway into new beginnings. The month of January is named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, transitions, time, and endings. Janus is often depicted with two faces: one looking to the past and one looking toward the future. This symbolism is especially meaningful as we step into a new year, reflecting on where we’ve been while intentionally choosing where we’re going.
Yet, despite this powerful symbolism, many people fall into the same cycle every year, setting New Year’s resolutions that rarely last beyond February.
Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work
People can begin again at any time of the year, but culturally, January has become the season of resolutions. Unfortunately, most resolutions are built on shaky ground. They are often influenced by external pressure, societal expectations, or comparison to others, what “the Joneses” are doing, rather than stemming from genuine internal desire.
Resolutions Lack Clarity
Another major issue is lack of clarity. Many people don’t truly know what they want or why they want it. As a result, resolutions tend to be overly ambitious, vague, or unrealistic. They imply a sudden, massive change with a pass-or-fail outcome, leaving no room for learning, growth, or flexibility. When progress stalls, as it often does, people become discouraged and disenchanted, and the resolution fades away.
Why Intentions Create Real, Lasting Change
Unlike resolutions, intentions are purposeful and flexible. They invite daily action and encourage you to dig deeper into what you genuinely desire. Intentions are not about perfection. They are about direction.
Your future is built on decisions. The most important decision you can make is simply to show up for yourself. That decision must come before motivation, before confidence, and before emotions. Feelings will fluctuate, but commitment is what carries you forward.
Reflection: The Bridge Between Past and Future
To create meaningful intentions, reflection is essential. Just like Janus looking both backward and forward, we must take time to review the past year. Don’t dwell on failures, but to gain clarity and insight.
Reflection is a game changer. Ask yourself:
- What were my biggest challenges?
- What brought me joy?
- What worked well for me?
- What no longer serves me?
You don’t need to analyze every detail. Just get the gist. Identify habits, behaviors, and mindsets that supported you. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Build on what already works.
At the same time, allow yourself to change direction. If something isn’t serving you, let it go. Try something new. Test it. Adjust it. Growth requires experimentation.
Embrace Imperfection & Choose Consistency
Everyone faces challenges. You are not alone, and you do not need to be perfect. In fact, perfection is the enemy of progress. What truly matters is consistency over intensity.
When you tried something for 30 days and giving up. You did not give it enough time. 30 days simply isn’t enough. This is the reason why my major programs are 90 days long. You will see the difference. Growth takes time. Patience is essential on any personal development journey.
Don’t Know Where to Start?
As a Certified Wholistic Health Coach, I work across all areas of life. Sometimes the hardest part is knowing where to begin. Life can be viewed through eight interconnected areas:
- Physical Health
- Mental Health
- Spiritual Health
- Emotional Health
- Career Health
- Financial Health
- Healthy Relationships
- Healthy Lifestyle
You don’t need to focus on all eight at once that’s overwhelming,. Often leads to burnout. Instead, choose two to four areas that feel most important right now. Focus creates momentum.
From Vague Resolutions to Clear Intentions
As I stated earlier, resolutions are vague. A resolution might sound like: “I want to lose 30 pounds.” Intentions are more specific. An intention sounds like: “I intend to lose 30 pounds in a way that nourishes my body and includes movement that I enjoy over the next four months. Knowing myself, I want accountability. I will seek coaching for guidance and accountability.”
Intentions are specific, compassionate, and actionable. They include how you’ll get there, a realistic timeframe, and support systems when needed.
Small Habits Lead to Big Results
Intentions give you direction. Habits create the path. Small, sustainable habits compound over time. If a habit feels too big, shrink it. Make it so easy you can’t say no. For instance, a 15-minute walk is better than skipping an hour-long workout that you think is too hard. Celebrate every small win. These tiny improvements matter more than you think. Later you can build on that habit and make it longer.
A highly recommended resource for habit-building is Atomic Habits by James Clear, which reinforces the power of small changes leading to remarkable results.
Make It Stick: Reduce Friction and Create Ease
To get a new habit going, set yourself up for success. Here are things you can do:
- Lay out workout clothes or work materials ahead of time
- Schedule habits when they realistically fit your life
- Start small and build gradually
- Adjust when something isn’t working
Think of it this way, when you create new habits, you are a new prototype of yourself. Test out one habit at a time to see how it working.
Review, Adjust, and Grow
Regular review is essential. Daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly check-ins help you understand what’s working and what needs adjustment. Ask yourself:
- How is this commitment integrating into my life?
- Did I truly create space for this intention?
- Is my life improving because of it?
Reviewing as you go makes the process easier and more successful. Continue this new habit of reviewing year after year.
Final Thoughts: A Better Framework for the Year Ahead
Real change doesn’t come from vague resolutions as I indicated. Remember to create the framework as Roman God Janus symbolizes and provides framing of beginning and ending of the year.
- Reflection of the previous years successes and what you need to work on.
- Decide what you want to do. Conscious decision-making propels you forward.
- Set clear simple intentions of what you want to do.
- Create small, daily habits that you will do and add on to them.
- Consistency and patience will make it happen.
This process creates clarity, confidence, and sustainable growth.
