Is Afternoon Fatigue a Mitochondrial Signal?
If you’ve ever felt like quicksand is pulling you down between 2–4 p.m., you’re not alone. That sluggish, heavy feeling isn’t because you’re lazy or unmotivated, it’s mitochondrial signal where your mitochondria calling out for better fuel.
Mitochondria are the tiny “power plants” inside your cells. They turn food into ATP, the energy that keeps you moving, thinking, and thriving. When they don’t have the right inputs, your body reaches for quick fixes, sugar, caffeine, or another snack that only leaves you crashing later.
The truth is, afternoon fatigue is less about needing more coffee and more about filling nutritional and lifestyle gaps. That’s why I love a simple, three-part stack that works with your biology: sunlight, Zone 2 cardio, and wholistic 90 Essential Nutrients.
This combination helps you:
- Calibrate your body clock so energy rises earlier and stays steady
- Train your cells to make more ATP with less fatigue
- Support mitochondrial function so you’re less dependent on sugar spikes
Here is a break down.
Sunlight Sets Your Energy Rhythm
As I wrote in my blog post about the circadian rhythm, natural light is one of the most underrated energy tools we have. Bright outdoor light anchors your circadian rhythm so normal levels of cortisol rise earlier in the morning, melatonin releases at night, and alertness improves throughout the day.
Here is what I do.
Morning anchor
Every morning, I have breakfast and my 90 essential nutrients and run for a hour. I recommend that you do exercise such as walking, biking or running within 60 minutes of waking. You can enjoy your breakfast outside for 5-10 minutes and exercise in later in the day as well. Getting that morning sunshine sets my rhythm for the day, and it will sets yours as well..
Midday boost
Make point to get outdoors for 2-5 minutes. You could walk to park to eat lunch or to a lunch date with co-workers. In a way it’s your “slump insurance” to energize your mitochondria. It wouldn’t hurt to get in a brisk walk or climb a flight of stairs too.
Daylight Tip: Even shade outside is far brighter than any indoor light, so don’t overthink it. Just step out the door.
Evening wind-down
Personally, I do an electronic detox two hours before going to bed. I wrap it by dimming the lights. I do mediation and some acupressure work to relax before going to bed to protect the next day’s energy.
Zone 2 Cardio – Endurance at the Cellular Level
Zone 2 Cardio is a big phrase right now. All it means is your exercise is targeting a heart rate zone. I personally start my day with Zone 2 exercise. This is easy, conversational cardio that trains your cells to build more and better mitochondria. The more mitochondria you have, the more energy you can make.
For many, afternoons aren’t the most practical time for workouts. Even a 10–15 minute brisk walk outdoors before the slump happens can be a game-changer. It combines daylight, gentle aerobic work, and a mental reset without draining you.
Cues for Zone 2
- You can talk in full sentences without gasping.
- Heart rate is around 60–70% of your maximum.
- Activities: walking on an incline, easy cycling, light jogging, or swimming.
Consistency is key, not heroics. Think 3–5 sessions per week, 30–45 minutes each, with one longer weekend session if possible.
Feed Your Mitochondria
Truly, you need to feed every cell in your body. In doing so you are feeding your mitochondria. This is where wholistic nutrition truly makes the difference. You don’t want to fractionized nutrition. Also, people state to take Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). It helps your mitochondria in every cell to turn food into energy. Well, it does, but every nutrient needs co-factors for better absorption.
Yes, health declines naturally with age. It doesn’t have too. With a full spectrum supplementation, you may lower the medications you are taking. Simply because your body will be a more efficient “machine”. A lot of people don’t know our foods, produce and meats have declined in nutritional value over the last 50+ years. Watch the video I just shared on why. What I do is to revitalize people’s health to reduce symptoms and make their body more efficient. With the right high-quality supplementation, it can be a game-changer. It has for me and many others.
So, If you are looking for a better way to absorb your Coenzyme Q10, 90 for Life is your solution! It comes in a variety of combinations. I recommend starting with the basic pack The Healthy Body Start Pak is an ideal choice. I do have other recommendations on other packs for the basic nutrient needed, it depends how you want it delivered, pill, liquid or powder that you mix with water.
How I Suggest Taking CoQ10
It has been suggested you take 100–200 mg Coenzyme Q10 daily with a meal which works perfectly with the Health Body Start Pak. It is whole food product that has 16 vitamins, 60 minerals, 12 amino acids and 3 essential fatty acids. There are three products in this pak. Beyond Tangy Tangerine 2.0 does have some CoQ10. 3.0 Rise and Restore that has more. As I mentioned, these are co-factors for better absorption. It will also bring your body to homeostasis and in the process improve your gut.
I recommend to take supplementation with breakfast or first meal. To add more CoQ10, ultilize Integris® – CoQ10 Plus E to get the recommended amount indicated. Of course, you need a healthy toxic free that meals that includes healthy fats such as pasture raised chicken eggs, avocado, or plain Greek yogurt.
Also is recommend that form of CoQ10 is ubiquinol tends to be better absorbed in older adults, while ubiquinone works well for many people. The products that I recommended are ubiquinol.
The final recommendation is to pair it with breakfast which I already indicated. It will support your day’s energy.
To truly see the energy benefits give it 4 weeks with being consistency matters. You will see more results in 90 days.
Pulling It All Together: A 14-Day Reset
Give this trending “stack” a test:
- Morning: Remember in the morning, get sunlight within 30–60 minutes of waking and take your supplementation that includse CoQ10 with breakfast.
- Midday: Step outside for light exposure and, if time allows, 10–15 minutes of brisk walking.
- Evening: Dim lights before bed and take a short post-dinner walk if possible.
Over two weeks, track your energy at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. You’ll likely notice:
- Fewer “must snack now” moments
- More consistent focus in the afternoon
- A smoother transition into the evening without dragging yourself along
Other Hacks to Energize the Mitochondria
Another hack for energizing your mitochondria is utilizing hydrogen water and red-light therapy. Dr. Paul Baratierro the Founder of Echo Water, a hydrogen water company and Luma Nova a red-light Therapy company, talks on my podcast about how these two modalities will energize your mitochondria. You can purchase his products with a 10% discount at these sites. Use this site for Echo Water and use the coupon code: debichangeslives. Use this site for LumaNova and use the coupon code YOUNG10. Final Thoughts
The 2–4 p.m. slump isn’t just “part of life.” It’s often your mitochondria sending a signal that they need support. By giving them the right nutrition and rhythms, light, movement, and CoQ10, you can shift from dragging through the afternoon to powering through it with steady energy.
Your mitochondria matters. Give them the right stack, and they’ll do the rest.
