This Summer Gear up for Health and Beauty

Summer in Huntington Beach or wherever your adventures take you is all about soaking up that glorious sunshine! The longer days, warm breezes, and sparkling water beckon us outdoors. But as much as we love the sun’s embrace, it’s crucial to remember that mindful protection is key to enjoying the season safely and sustainably. Let’s safely gear up this summer for health and beauty.

Safely Enjoy the Outdoors

As your Certified Wholistic Health Coach, I believe in embracing life fully, and that includes enjoying the outdoors without compromising your long-term health. That’s why investing in the right summer sun gear isn’t just about fashion. It’s about safeguarding your well-being, maintaining energetic balance, and supporting your body from the outside in.

Here’s a look at essential summer sun gear and the powerful benefits they offer:

Cooling Shirts and Tops: Your Personal Climate Control

When my son decided to go to University of Arizona, Tucson.  I needed to invest in cooling gear.  I fell in love with Artic Cool. Now they are part of my running gear. Gone are the days of sticky, heavy fabrics in the heat. Modern cooling shirts, dresses and tops are game-changers for anyone spending time under the sun.  They even have cooling towels you can get wet them several times a day to keep you cool.  Other brands where I have used cooling gear are Columbia and Mission.

Benefits:

Temperature Regulation

These aren’t just regular t-shirts! As I stated, items come in dresses, tops and towels.  These items are designed with advanced fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin, they accelerate evaporation. This natural cooling process helps to regulate your body temperature, keeping you feeling refreshingly cool even when the mercury rises. Plus, you can get the towels wet to cool you down for hours. No more feeling clammy or overheated.

UV Protection

This is a major one! Many high-quality cooling clothing come with built-in UV protection, often indicated by an UPF rating, similar to SPF for sunscreen. This significantly reduces the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and long-term skin damage from harmful UV exposure. It’s a layer of defense you wear!

Comfort and Breathability

Crafted from lightweight, airy, and highly breathable materials, these shirts feel incredible on hot days. They allow air to circulate freely, preventing that stifling feeling and providing unmatched comfort during all your outdoor activities, from a beach run to a casual stroll.

Sun Hats Are Your Stylish Shield

A good sun hat is more than just an accessory. It’s a vital piece of your sun protection arsenal. The companies I already mentioned have hats as well.  Pick what you need and what you want to be protected.

Benefits:

Face and Neck Protection

The most immediate benefit is a wide-brimmed hat, think 3-4 inches or more can effectively shield your face, ears, and the back of your neck from direct sunlight. This significantly reduces exposure to UV rays in these vulnerable areas, where skin is often thinner and more prone to sun damage.

Heat Reduction

By providing immediate shade over your head, a sun hat helps to keep your scalp and face cooler. This can prevent overheating, reduce the risk of sunstroke, and help you maintain a more comfortable core body temperature during prolonged outdoor activity.

Versatility

From chic straw fedoras to practical wide-brimmed adventure hats, there’s a sun hat for every style and activity. They can be both highly functional and a fashionable addition to your summer outfits, allowing you to stay protected without sacrificing your personal aesthetic.

Don’t Forget the Basics!

While cooling shirts and sun hats are fantastic additions, always remember the foundation of sun safety:

Sunscreen

Apply an eco-safe sunblock that does not have oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene ingredients. These chemicals are not safe for you, our the reefs and the environment. Apply the sunblock as directed.  More is you are swimming often or sweating.

Sunglasses

Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays with sunglasses that block 99-100% of both UVA and UVB rays.  You need to take care of you eyes otherwise you will get cataracts or eye damage. I personally love Oakley because you can design your own sunglasses for different uses and environments

Seek Shade

I remember running in Tuson and I did  a Facebook live indicating it is best to run early in the morning or seek shade.  People can always walk in malls for exercise during these hot summer months.  Remember seek shade specially during peak UV hours (10 AM to 4 PM), make use of natural or artificial shade.

Hydrate

What is summer without hydrating.  You will not feel well and get heatstroke.   Complement your external protection with internal hydration! Drink plenty of water throughout the day.  A person should drink half their body weight in ounces a day.  During the summer, drink a lot more because your are sweating, Drinking plenty of water will cool your down.

So this summer, let’s make sun protection a priority, not an afterthought. By gearing up with the right essentials, you can fully embrace the joy of the season, knowing you’re supporting your body and mind for vibrant health.
