Summer Sleeping Woes?
Having problems with sleeping in the summer? Summer can bring its own set of challenges when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. Longer days, hotter nights, and increased stimulation can all impact our sleep quality. I give you some practical solutions to tackle summer sleep challenges.
Northern Nights
Living in far north regions like Alaska and Michigan means dealing with longer daylight hours. Too much light disrupts sleeping in summer. To combat this, it’s crucial to create a sleep-friendly environment. Invest in blackout curtains and consider using earplugs or a white noise machine to block out excessive daylight and noise.
EMF Affects Sleep Quality
Technology can disrupt our sleep patterns due to the electromagnetic frequency (EMF) it emits. According to RadiaSmart, “EMFs can negatively affect our sleep quality is due to their interference with melatonin production in the body.”
To promote better sleep, avoid using electronic devices at least an hour before bedtime. This includes TVs, cellphones, and any other EMF-emitting devices. Plus, the blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the darkness of your room. Consider reducing exposure to blue light and maintaining a tech-free hour before bed.
Meditation for a Calm Mind
Engaging in meditation an hour before bedtime can have significant benefits for sleep. It helps relax the mind, release emotions, and prepare your brain for restful sleep. Various techniques can be used, such as “Box Breathing.” Additionally, binaural audios can be helpful. Feel free to contact me for recommendations.
Temperature Matters
Maintaining an optimal room temperature is crucial for quality sleep. Healthline suggests a temperature of around 65°F (18°C) for better sleep. Our bodies naturally release warmth while sleeping, and extreme temperatures can disrupt our internal temperature regulation, leading to disturbed sleep.
Hydration and Sleep
Hot summer days and physical activity can lead to increased sweating and dehydration. Even normal breathing releases water vapor, approximately 300-400 milliliters of water a day. Sleep deprivation may worsen dehydration, which can, in turn, impact sleep. It’s essential to stay hydrated throughout the day to support healthy sleep patterns. Above all remember to drink more than half your body weight in ounces a day during the summer months. If you normally drink 80 ounces of water, increase it to 100 ounces. Consume the water throughout the day.
