Why Your Sunscreen Choice Matters?

It Effects You and the Ocean

Summer is coming and the use of sunscreen skyrockets. Sunscreen choice matters. But before you slather on your favorite brand and head out into the sun, there’s something you need to know. Not all sunscreens are created equal, especially when it comes to protecting your body and the planet.

The Problem with Conventional Sunscreens

Most people grab a sunscreen based on SPF and how easily it rubs in. The hidden truth is many conventional sunscreens rely on synthetic chemical ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene, ingredients that may offer skin protection, but at a cost most people aren’t aware of.

These chemicals wash off in the water while you’re swimming, surfing, or even wading. What they leave behind is devastating. Coral reefs, fish, and even microscopic phytoplankton are suffering. In fact, coral death has been recorded at chemical concentrations as low as 5 parts per billion. That’s like a drop in a swimming pool. Yet, some popular tourist destinations have seen levels over 1,000 parts per billion.

It’s no surprise that places like Hawai‘i, Aruba, Palau, and Key West have banned certain chemical sunscreens altogether. These places recognize what many still ignore that chemical sunscreens are polluting marine ecosystems and disrupting aquatic life.

Understanding Sun Rays

There are three main types of ultraviolet (UV) rays that come from the sun: UVA, UVB, and UVC. According to Ben Fuchs, UVA is often called the “aging ray” because it penetrates deep into the skin, contributing to premature wrinkles and signs of aging. UVB is known as the “burning ray” since it causes sunburn, but it also plays a vital role in helping our bodies produce vitamin D, which supports immune and bone health. UVC, sometimes referred to as the “cancer ray,” is the most dangerous, but fortunately, it’s mostly filtered out by the Earth’s ozone layer and rarely reaches the surface.

What Our Sunscreens Do

Most sunscreens on the market mainly block UVB rays. That means you’re protected from burning, but not from UVA, which still penetrates your skin and may increase the risk of long-term damage.

Sunblocks, are another option that usually contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These mineral ingredients form a physical barrier that blocks both UVA and UVB ray, offering more complete protection.

Major Concerns with Conventional Sunscreens

Blocking UVB rays can also mean blocking your body’s ability to produce vitamin D, an essential nutrient that supports immune function, bone health, and overall well-being. By using a sunscreen that blocks UVB, you might be missing out on one of the sun’s most important health benefits which is  is vitamin D. At the same time, UVA rays—which are not always blocked by conventional sunscreens—can still reach your skin. Since you don’t burn as quickly with UVB blocked, you may end up staying in the sun longer, unknowingly increasing your exposure to UVA. This extended exposure can lead to deeper, long-term skin damage without the warning signs of a sunburn.

To make things more concerning, many of the chemical ingredients used to block either UVA or UVB rays can be toxic to both your body and the environment as stated at the beginning of this blog post.

But It’s Not Just the Ocean at Risk…

If you’re thinking, “Well, I don’t swim in the ocean,” think again. Chemical sunscreen ingredients absorb directly into your skin in exactly, 26 seconds. You can even taste the chemicals in your mouth. Over 90% of Americans tested by the CDC had oxybenzone in their urine. It’s also been found in breast milk and drinking water. Studies suggest these chemicals may interfere with your hormonal system, affecting growth, reproduction, and even mood.

Worse is some ingredients become more toxic when exposed to sunlight.

Reef-Safe, Body-Safe Alternatives

There is good news. You don’t have to give up protection from harmful UV rays. You just need to choose better ingredients.

Reef-safe mineral sunscreens use non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as their active ingredients. That’s it. No hormone disruptors, no marine toxicity, and no synthetic chemicals seeping into your bloodstream. Another bonus is that these minerals sit on top of your skin rather than absorbing into the skin, providing a physical barrier against the sun and preserving your health.

Head Up!

Always read the label. The terms “reef safe” and “reef friendly” are not regulated. Many brands use these words as marketing, even if their formulas include toxic chemicals. If it contains avobenzone, octinoxate, oxybenzone, octocrylene, or nanoparticles, it’s not reef-safe, no matter what the front label claims.

Choosing Wisely Protects More Than Skin

This summer, think beyond SPF. Your choice of sunscreen can help protect not just your health, but the future of our oceans. Pick brands that care. Look for non-nano mineral-based sunscreens, and skip the synthetic cocktail. It’s time we stop trading convenience for long-term damage. So your sunscreen choice matters. Your skin deserves real protection and so does our planet.
